When a customer in Nottingham called DALROD and reported foul smells and slow drainage from their kitchen sink, our team had a good idea of what the cause might be… DALROD Nottingham was on hand to deal with the familiar culprit, fat in the drains. Luckily, our experienced engineers are all too familiar with this situation and were able to resolve the problem with professionalism and precision.

Finding and Clearing the Blockage
Our engineer began by exposing the sink trap and using a flex shaft to target the kitchen waste line. A dye test was then performed to trace the outlet to a manhole
Further investigation using CCTV technology confirmed the presence of a stubborn fatberg, a hardened mass of fat and debris lodged in the pipework.
Using High-Pressure Water Jetting (HPWJ), DALROD Nottingham back jetted from the manhole, dislodging the fatberg and pulling the waste into the manhole for removal.
The result? A fully restored flow to the kitchen sink and no more unpleasant smells. This allowed the customer to return to their daily routine without further disruption.
Fat Disposal Tips: Prevent Blockages Before They Begin
Pouring fat and grease down the drain may seem harmless, but it’s a recipe for disaster. Over time, fat solidifies in the pipes, causing blockages, bad smells and costly repairs.
Here are some simple ways to safely dispose of fats and oils at home:
- Cool and Scrape: Let fat cool and harden, then scrape it into a container or wrap it in paper before disposing of it in the bin.
- Recycle Cooking Oil: Check if your local recycling centre accepts used cooking oil. Many do! Find out if your local council offers this service here.
When fat solidifies, it turns into a rock-like material, wreaking havoc on your drainage system. - Use Absorbents: Wipe greasy pans and dishes with kitchen paper before rinsing to reduce fat buildup in your sink.
